While trying to register on the quizilla site today i got down to the bottom of the site and was asked to check whether i was male or female. Of course i tried to proceed without checking either one, but as i hit send i was given my daily reminder that
GENDER IS REQUIRED - PLEASE GO BACK
Sorry, my friends, but there’s no going back. Even if i wanted to, there is no going back.

I register these requests, but as a bio gendered femme stuck presently stuck fully in the gender I was born with, I have the privilege and space to just sigh and choose. I won’t say sorry about quizzilla. That would be stupid and ineffectual. I won’t say it sucks cuz I really don’t know personally and don’t want to erase your experience. I’ll just go back to my place and try not to avoid gender and my power and privilege as much as I do.
Thanks, darkdauhghta. I just don’t even understand why gender is always required when registering at different places online. Is it really that hard not to include the snipet of code that forces us into a false dichotomy?
And i wouldn’t say it sucks. Sucking is something i associate with pleasure and i certainly got no pleasure out of this daily reminder.
“Sucking is something i associate with pleasure…”
hee, hee, hee!
But, (cough)…ahem…on a more serious note. There should be some way to bipass that crap. I’d like to be able to at least leave it blank.
But then you would fall outside the binary gender system and that cannot be allowed to happen, oh no. There might an apocalypse if people started refusing to be male or female ….. or, you never know, it might be a happier world.
I’m pretty sure that the fourth “horseman” of the apocalypse was actually a tranny. That’s just what happens when you don’t play nice - everyone dies.
vegan you’re so funny!!! :p
its a coping mechanism i learned as child. What can i say… i never grew up.
Chris,
I’ve posted something I’m wondering if you’d like to comment on/critique…

This script for Greasemonkey will fix it. Just install Greasemonkey (I’m assuming you’re using Mozilla here — if not, start by installing that). Then install the user script, and you’ll have a new option for gender on that registration screen.
wow! This is amazing! I used this script today and it actually works! I never thought to use programming in this way to bend gender. Thanks, novalis.
Glad to help — I’ve been meaning to learn how GreaseMonkey works for a while now. Unfortunately, I can’t do the same thing for LiveJournal. Well, I can — but I think something bad happens to it when it goes into their database, because when I look back at it (something that’s not possible with Quizilla), it just shows “Unspecified”. Oh well.
Hi there! Just a wanderer, passing through, but this post interested me. I think it’s stupid to require a gender ID when signing up for a website, too, but I believe they ask for gender information for demographic purposes. It is my understanding that this is a part of market research, ect. It would be nice if they did away with it altogether, but if they MUST ask for one’s gender, I’d like to see a trans option or something like that.
chevy - i understand that they are using those little radio buttons as market testing for demographics. And i’m sure that one day soon we’ll start to see a third option on the gender line and many of us trannies will begin to wonder “why am i getting so many emails about penis enlargement, anti-depressants, and accepting jesus?” Well, because we aren’t sentient beings, we are markets. A market of sinners, for sure, but our money can still be accepted by the “love the sinners’ money, hate the sin” attitude of capitalism. I wish we could just have a world where we weren’t seen as consumer potential. ya know?
