Sosa: Unrest in Oaxaca Start of Upheaval
Flavio Sosa is remarkably relaxed for a wanted man. As the most visible leader of a leftist movement that has rattled the Vicente Fox administration, chased state police out of this southern Mexican city and challenged hundreds of federal troops, Sosa faces arrest warrants on riot and conspiracy charges. He also has received death threats, no small worry in a city where there have been at least nine political killings since August, mostly of Sosa’s fellow leftists. But sitting in a colonial plaza, just two blocks away from an encampment of police clutching rifles and riot shields, the 41-year-old activist couldn’t stop smiling.
“It’s no use living my life in fear and being scared every time I go out in the street,” he said. “This movement is beautiful. I’m proud to be a part of it.” read the full article

The Communications War in Oaxaca
Silencing the radio has not succeeded by force: neither the invasion of the facilities of the university nor shooting up the antenna on the Fortin Hill. That worked once to silence the station, but somehow the students rebuilt. Another attack came on November 4. This recent attack succeeded in making a hole, presently being repaired by technicians as was done before. However, the range of the transmission has been harmed; it no longer reaches the entire city. When the invasion of the university failed, the PRI supporters launched yet another campaign of static interference on the weakened radio signal. That type of noise was previously used against the other radio stations when they were in APPO hands. Now it’s being used on Radio Universidad. The movement depends on the radio for calls for help (such as when the university was under attack), for summons to the barricades, for announcing rallies, meetings, and marches –in short, for the communications necessary to maintain the struggle. Once again on Monday morning the alarm went out. read the full article

Que Pasa en Oaxaca?
On the eve of the police occupation the teacher’s union signed a wage agreement and agreed to go back to work. The push to topple Ruiz would have continued but the core of the resistance movement was effectively neutralized. On that same day, however, government officials opened fire on a group of protestors, killing US citizen Brad Will and raising the profile of the dispute internationally. read the full article
The Palestinian Anti-Apartheid Wall Campaign Honors the Martyrs of Oaxaca
In this dreadful Autumn of death and destruction, the Palestinian and Mexican people are united more than ever in a common history, mourning and struggle.
In Palestine in the last 48 hours a new massacre has been perpetrated. 20 martyrs from the refugee camp of Beit Hanoun have been added to the hundreds of victims that have been killed since June, when the Occupation forces launched another ruthless offensive in the Gaza Strip.
In the same way, since June the Mexican government has started to use all the destructive force of its military against the 70,000 educational workers in Oaxaca who struggle for their rights. The same government that followed the demands of the US government to send its soldiers to invade and massacre the Iraqi people today turns these weapons against its own people in defense of imperialist interests. read the full letter
