homo want a soy cracker?

I’ve been meaning to comment on this since a friend sent it to me last week. I’m sure most of my vegan readers have seen this by now (i’ve now seen it in 3 or 4 vegan blogs and forums). But for those of you who haven’t, go read ‘Soy is making kids gay‘, published in the World Net Daily. There is so much ridiculous stuff to respond to that i don’t know where to begin. A lot of it speaks for itself, so i’ll leave it untouched. But i’m a little confused.

Yes, soy (like many of the other plant-based foods) serves as a natural form of estrogen. This natural endocrine works to slightly increase the estrogen levels in bodies with higher testoterone count and decreases the amount of estrogen in estrogen-rich bodies. No arguements there. That’s just the beauty of science. But i’m confused as to where this guy’s research is that shows that it is an increase in estrogen that makes someone gay. Because i’m willing to bet that if there is any research on this subject, it will show this claim to be false. But alas, he doesn’t cite his sources.

But the part that really has me confused is the assumption that sexuality is directly correlated to hormone count. So estrogen is naturally attracted to testosterone. If this is the case, wouldn’t male-male relationships require that one of them had a high estrogen count and the other a high testosterone count? And if this is the case, is the one with the high testosterone count still heterosexual? And if both of them have a high estrogen count, does this mean they are actually lesbians?

Sorry ridiculous questions for a ridiculous theory.

Of course, the part that makes you realize this article is a bunch of homophobic crap, is the first line: “There’s a slow poison out there that’s severely damaging our children and threatening to tear apart our culture.” That’s right, homosexuality is damaging our children and tearing apart our culture. I’m not familiar with WND, but looking at their other article titles, i’m guessing they are a right-wing Christian publication. So its no surprise that they would print such rubbish.

I just wanted to share one more part of the article: “If your baby gets colic from cow’s milk, do you switch him to soy milk? Don’t even think about it. His phytoestrogen level will jump to 20 times normal. If he is a she, brace yourself for watching her reach menarche as young as seven, robbing her of years of childhood. If he is a boy, it’s far worse: He may not reach puberty till much later than normal.” Please stop, my side hurts! I agree that babies aren’t supposed to be fed soy products (although we disagree on the reasons), but research has also shown they aren’t supposed to be fed cow’s milk. But i’m curious what his option is if the baby does get colic from cow’s milk. Let them starve! Death is better than homosexuality! And i like how there is a perfect window for puberty. And that its soy (not the far more damaging endocrine disruptors found in such products as factory-farmed milk) that are causing wimmin to reach puberty at an earlier age. And why is it that its “far worse” for a guy’s puberty schedule to be off-set than a womyn’s? hmm… i’ll try not to think about it too hard.

Ok, just wanted to share the laughs with you.

treat her like a piece of meat

cross-posted at Taking Place

I may not like a lot of PETA’s policies, but they can be damn good at investigative reporting. This past July, PETA met with ConAgra CEO Mike Walter. At the meeting, Walter assured PETA that no abuse was going on inside the company’s turkey slaughterhouses. As we all know, you have to take everything a CEO says with a grain of salt, and that is just what PETA did.

Immediately preceeding the meeting, PETA placed an insider (known as a “salt” among unions) in one of ConAgra’s Arkansas plants. The 40 days of investigation produced some very damning video evidence. The footage showed, among other things:

  • Workers slamming live birds against shackles, metal trailers, and handrails with such force that one turkey’s spine popped out.
  • Workers routinely kicking live birds and often used them as punching bags.
  • One employee stomping on a bird’s head until her skull exploded.
  • Another employee assaulting a hanging turkey by inserting his finger into her cloaca (vagina).

PETA took the video footage to the Franklin County, AK prosecutor and it looks as though something will happen in retribution. If i were to bet, i’d say the company will probably fire the offending employees, decry them as atrocious anomolies, and go about their business. But i don’t buy into the idea that the problem is with some messed-up workers. The problem is much bigger, more systematic.

I’m driven to ask, why is slaughtering an animal not enough? Why is it necessary to humiliate, sexually assault, and torture the animals before killing them? Well, i won’t get in to all the explanations that have been put forth, but it can be boiled down to power politics. Power politics can play out in nasty ways. Those with power-over use it to abuse, repress, and oppress those whom they hold power over. Those who are denied power in one aspect of their life will often take it out on those over whom they hold power in another aspect of their life. Its a learned behavior pattern that is institutionalized.

Institutions, like everything else, are interconnected. Not just through business deals, but through the practices that reinforce power structures. Carol Adams illustrates the power of absent referents in phrases like “chick”, “grade A piece of ass”, “piece of meat”, and others when referring to wimmin. Those referents go back to what has been documented inside this ConAgra plant (among others).

I’d like to get audio recordings from inside the slaughterhouses as these turkeys were being beaten and sexually assaulted. I’m willing to bet the gendered terminology was in no shortage. Its no coincidence that wimmin are systematically beaten and raped outside the slaughterhouse, while non-humyn animals (most often female) suffer the same fate inside the jungle walls. Wimmin, as well as people of color of all genders, are referred to as non-humyn animals as a way to set up and justify their systematic abuse. We have a simple word for it - dehumanization, which basically means to strip someone of their humyn status and treat them as we treat non-humyn animals. But in order for this campaign to be successful, non-humyn animals must be set up as justifiably abuseable lesser-thans.

As i see it, these referents feed off each other. A womyn is raped and called a bitch (a female dog), a pig, or a piece of meat because these animals are lesser-than and therefore acceptable abused. And then a turkey is raped because she has a vagina and is therefore deserving of abuse. To argue for a root cause is ridiculous because the problem is the whole problem and must be faced as a whole. But if we want to see an end to abuse inside slaughterhouses we must not focus on further punishing workers. Instead, we must address the greater problems found in power politics that create destructive and abusive hierarchies.

mad leafy greens

I’m curious and hoping someone can answer a question for me. I was watching the news yesterday and as i’m sure those of you in the US have heard, spinach has been recalled due to e.coli (i’m assuming this has effective ruined its nickname, mad cow disease). Anyway, the hard-hitting news reporter gets down to the street level to find out what people think about these mad leafy greens. A couple of people responded with something along the lines of “i’m never going to eat spinach again.” Seriously? Did they respond this way when they found out that the spinach only got e.coli cuz some shit from some cow, which they may later have for dinner or with some cookies, happened to splash on the spinach? Ok, so the question i’m hoping to get answered, why are people so quick to give up spinach, but not the industry that actually spread the e. coli?
